Since the Blu-Ray format started, there have been a tremendous amount of different re-issues and remastered versions of titles that had previously only been on DVD (and VHS). However, I feel that MGM has pushed the bar up higher with their release of West Side Story on its 50tyh anniversary. Thhe feature is incredibly clear, and will be a completely different experience for anyone that has already seen the film.

For those that are new converts to the West Side Story cause, this version of the film is the closest thing to seeing the original airing in movie theaters. The audio captures every line and utterance of the film in a way similar to that of the visual quality, so those individuals that have tremendous audiovisual systems will be in for a treat. Each of the three discs has additional features present. This means that the first disc contains the main 1080p remaster of the musical, along with a breakdown of each of the film’s inimitable dances and a commentary on the different numbers by Stephen Sondheim.

The special features roll over to the second disc, with an expansion about the cultural impact of West Side Story along with exactly how timeless the story is told is. I found the linking of the storyboard to actual in-movie scenes to be the most fascinating, as there are some pretty substantial derivations from the original plans for the film. This should be the perfect gift for anyone that is a fan of the musical, and will be the perfect introduction for anyone that has not had the chance to see this little slice of Americana. Pick it up from online sellers – a copy can currently be procured for a hair under $20.
