Son of the Tongue’s Prison has a diffuse opening, while gradually bringing listeners into something that melds fury with technical virtuosity. Masters of loudness, Hierophant is able to create something that looks to redefine what metal can do. Cutting off at the three minute mark, Son of the Tongue’s Prison is an early hit for the band. Son of the Carcinoma is the album’s shortest effort, but Hierophant is able to connect with fans intimately. The arrangements are balanced and tell a story, even as the band inevitably rockets to the track’s close.
Son of the Cathartic Cave showcases that the utter fury of Hierophant does not wane as the disc begins to spin to a close. The driving beat and emotional intensity of Hierophant cannot be overestimated; the band creates some heavy stuff for Great Mother: Holy Monster. Only a shade over four minutes, the density of this composition is as fulfilling as an effort with twice the length. Son of the Black Mirror is the final effort on Great Mother: Holy Monster, representing a track that changes speed and direction at the drop of a pin. Rather than letting the disc spin to a close, Hierophant continue to bludgeon listeners with every screamed vocal, bold guitar riff, and splashy drum hit.
