Despite being a documentary, the brilliant Stories We Tell unspools more like a fictional family drama. Helmed by actress (The Sweet Hereafter, Dawn of the Dead) and director (Away From Her) Sarah Polley, she turns the camera on her own family for this one.

Narrated by her actor/father, the doc examines Polley’s family, specifically her mom and dad and whether or not the man who raised her was her biological father. The movie show the family members, despite having wrestled with secrets that could easily  have caused them  to drift apart and stop speaking, as people who genuinely love and care about each other.

Sweet, brave and surprisingly open, Stories We Tell gives credence to the belief that every family has its secrets.
