Each day it’s likely that we hear of a new song, album or artist that’s about to be released, and as an up and coming artist you want to make sure that the music you’re making is individual, and that once you’ve released your music that you will catch people’s attention and stand out from the crowd. If you’re new to the scene of music it’s likely that you’re unsure on how to approach releasing your music, and sometimes what even to write about for your songs. Here are some top tips for up and coming artists in today’s music world.

Don’t just write about love

As you already know, there are millions of songs that have already been released that are based on a love story; whether it be tragic or not. This approach to music has been totally proven to work, otherwise the songs wouldn’t have been so successful. However, if you want to make a statement with your music and stand out from the rest of the artists, write about other important things in life too. Many artists such as Enter Shikari write about politics alongside love songs, and they keep their love songs quite hidden. By this we mean that the songs aren’t immediately obvious that they are written about love. Be clever with your writing and your lyrics so that you can make sure your songs are stuck in people’s heads.

Keep it old school

You’re probably already aware that the majority of music sales is now through download. Thanks to the recent years technology boost, we now don’t have to head to the shops to get our favourite music to add to our collection. However, there are still millions of people around the world who want to have the CD copy of their favourite bands, so make sure that when you release your music that you’re making it available in all forms.

Keep an eye on trends

One thing that’s great for up and coming artists is keep an eye on trends within the niche that their music is. This will allow you to take elements that work from other artists and add your own spin to them. Be careful not to copy other bands too much otherwise your music will simply slip into the background of people’s minds.

Try to take a current trend and take it in a slightly different direction. As you’ve already heard, many artists are collaborating with rappers to add a different spin to their music. Consider trying this but instead of rappers, collaborate with a different genre of music so that you stand out from the crowd.

Create a look that’s going to stand out from the rest

Finally, you need to make sure that your image stands out too. Think of artists like Sia – she chooses to wear a wig that’s over her face, and this keeps people interested! Try something wacky for your image!
