You may be eagerly awaiting time in the summer sun after suffering through another long winter. Once the heat arrives, however, the heat can quickly become an issue. Here are ways to fight the heat and stay comfortable through the summer.

  1. Hair

People often don’t appreciate the impact hair can have on your comfort. Now is the time to look at options that are more suitable for the summer. For men, a shorter haircut can help keep you cool and comfortable but beware as it can make it easier to get a painful sunburn on your scalp. Combining a short haircut with a hat can keep you cool and protected.

For women, often the best options are either longer hair that can be pulled back into a ponytail or to go with shorter hair that is cooler. Summer could be a great time to try a new, shorter haircut. Pixie cuts are back in style with newer options like longer bangs that make them more versatile and easier for anyone to wear.

For women who wear wigs, summer could be the right time to switch to a newer design. A shorter haircut will still be cooler and going with a synthetic wig can be a lighter, and therefore cooler, option. Pick a wig with a breathable cap. That will make a huge difference in comfort. For example, Natural Image Wigs combine newer synthetic materials with a comfortable cap. The newer cap designs now allow for shorter hair designs with a natural-looking hairline.

  1. Clothes

The temptation is to shed as much clothing as possible when the weather turns hot. Keep in mind, that sometimes less is not best. Sleeveless tops and short skirts or shorts may become uncomfortably hot due to the amount of skin exposed to sunlight. If you’ll be in the sun for extended periods, your risk of receiving a sunburn or skin damage from UV rays can be considerations.

Consider a longer, flowing skirt to provide coverage while helping you keep cool. Sleeveless tops can be paired with a lightweight coverup to protect you. Tighter clothing tends to be hotter so think in terms of lightweight fabrics and loose, flowing designs.

  1. Umbrellas

Parasols may have gone out of fashion but the concept is still important. Umbrellas can be used as a modern take on parasols. They can provide protection from the sun while keeping you prepared in case summer shower arrive.

  1. Hats

Keep the sun off your face and head by wearing a hat. Lightweight fabrics will be more comfortable in the heat and a wider brim will do a better job of preventing sunburns. Consider a hat with built-in venting to help keep your head cool. An internal mesh or clothing lining can wick sweat away from your head.

  1. Fans

Don’t forget fans as a great way to keep cool. At home or work ceiling fans or portable fans can do the trick. At the park or game, small handheld fans can provide just enough airflow to keep you from getting too hot.

  1. Hydrate

Remember, one of the most important ways to remain cool and comfortable is to stay hydrated. In the heat, you’ll need to consume even more liquids in order to avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and the heat is less likely to be an issue.
