Type of Guy is a hopeful R&B / pop track that soars on James’s vocals and a synth-heavy backdrop that links together Owl City and Jason Derulo. There is a timeless sound to this track that will appease any fan of radio-friendly music. However, Cole is able to create a set of vocal/instrumental dynamics that will continue to impress listeners even 5 or 10 spins in. The insistent keys that play at the bottom of Type of Guy’s second half hammers home this single. We’re excited to hear more from James Cole in the months and years to come, especially if more of the rap-infused flow heard toward the end of this cut occurs.
