Some exciting new movies are coming out of Hollywood in the next few years, from a wide variety of genres. But what are the latest trends you can expect to see from the film industry? If you want to keep your finger on the pulse of Hollywood, read on.
Remakes
In recent years, Hollywood studios have gone overboard with releasing remakes of classic and much-loved movies like Aladdin, the Planet of the Apes series, Dredd, and True Grit. The trend of remaking films looks set to continue into 2020 and beyond. However, despite the investments pouring into rebooting famous movies, research studies suggest audiences are turned off by rehashed films. According to one study, remakes listed on IMDB scored 91% lower than their original counterparts, and they were only 21% more profitable. But Hollywood studios are not letting such statistics put them off. In 2020, you will be able to watch several remakes, including The Secret Garden, Dolittle, The Grudge, Godzilla Vs. Kong, Black Beauty, and Dune.
Musicals
Musicals have been making a comeback in the 21st century. There have been major successes like La La Land, which won a record-breaking seven awards at the 2016 Golden Globes, as well as a host of other awards, including five Oscars. Other musical successes of recent years have included Rocketman, Mary Poppins Returns, Mamma Mia! and A Star Is Born. There have also been lots of less successful box-office musical movies like the recent Cats. The musical-trend looks set to continue in Hollywood and the next few years. In 2020, you will be able to watch films like West Side Story, which also falls into the remake trend category. However, the movie looks like it will be much closer to the Broadway script than it is to the 1961 film adaptation. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story follows teenagers Maria and Tony, who fall in love. But problems arise because they belong to the rival street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Another musical to watch out for in 2020 is In the Heights. The musical drama is based on the successful Broadway musical of the same name. The story takes place over three days and follows characters mainly from the Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York.
Female Leads
In this day and age, it is about time that there were more iconic female lead characters in movies. In 2019, Marvel Studios released their first female-led movie: Captain Marvel, which follows an extraterrestrial warrior fighting an intergalactic war to save her people. It looks like Marvel Studios will continue to invest in female-led films. Although no details have yet been announced, rumors of an all-female cast for a future Marvel film are rife. With other all-female casts in recent movies like the Ghostbusters remake, the trend seems set to continue over the coming years. Notable films featuring strong female lead roles coming out in 2020 include the horror film Underwater, the comedy film Like a Boss, the mystery movie The Turning, and the much-anticipated Wonder Woman sequel. It’s not only female leads that are becoming a trend. Thankfully, there are also a lot of female directors releasing big movies in the next few years. These include the comedy 79ers, from director Kay Cannon, the drama Buffalo flats, by Emma Westenberg, and the science-fiction movie Tao, directed by Emily Dean.
