When Liverpool defeated Sheffield United on the 2nd January this year, they had gone 12 months without losing a game in the Premier League. Only two other Premiership sides have achieved this. Their last defeat was against Manchester City where The Reds lost 2-1 on the 3rd January 2018.

Currently, Liverpool holds the Champions League, Uefa Super Cup, and Fifa Club World Cup trophies. They are the first English side to hold all three trophies in the same year. Somewhat astonishingly, they are not the current Premier League champions. That is Manchester City’s honor. That said, you’d be a brave person to bet against Liverpool winning the Premiership this season.

Klopp’s Dream Team

A lot of the credit for Liverpool’s rise must go to their manager Jurgen Klopp. When he took charge of the team, the once-great side had lost their way. They were becoming mediocre, and by their high standards, they could not offer a credible title challenge or indeed challenge for any domestic trophy.

Klopp’s enthusiasm was infectious. Although success didn’t happen overnight, it steadily built. Within a few seasons, Klopp’s Liverpool began to win games, trophies, and respect. It is not a stretch to say that a new legacy of Liverpool success, a new golden age has begun.

During the last twelve months, outside of the Premiership, they have suffered three defeats. Two came in the Champions League where they lost a group game to Napoli and the first leg semi-final to Barcelona. Their second-leg comeback is now the stuff of legend, and the Reds went on to win that the tournament.

Their other defeat came in the FA Cup in January 2018. Klopp fielded a young, inexperienced side and they lost to Aston Villa.

Liverpool Chasing Arsenal’s Record

Arsenal and Chelsea are the only other clubs to be unbeaten in English top-flight Premier League football for twelve consecutive months. Arsenal went 49 games without a defeat in the 2003-04 season. If Liverpool can go to the end of the season without a loss, they will beat Arsenal’s record.

In Britain, however, Scotland’s Celtic FC achieved 62 league games unbeaten between 1915 to 1917. Beating this achievement is unlikely even for Liverpool.

Currently, Liverpool is top of the Premier League, thirteen points ahead of second-place Leicester City with a game in hand. They have won 32 out of their last 37 games. This equates to 2.73 points per game.

To give you an idea of how this compares, when Manchester City achieved a 100 points in one season they achieved 2.63 points per game.

Last season Liverpool achieved 97 points but could not catch Manchester City. They hold the record for the most points achieved by a runner up.

This season they must be thinking this year will be the year when they lift the Premier League trophy and start a new golden age for the club.
