Every so often you come across an artist that has been right under your nose for the longest time, but you never knew it. Des Cox is one such artist I am talking about. He started his career off way back in the early days of music and TV, and it involves a lot of well-known TV and film stuff, as well as having extensively toured as a live performer. His upcoming double album will consist of these five featured tracks and many more which include everything from ballad and spoken word to comedy and general laughter to entertain listeners.

The one thing Cox does in the process of it all is entertain no matter who you slice it and does so with the best of the older generation in a new time of uncertainty. And if the frontier awaits more where this came from, then his album A Little Ray Of Light will help light the way for his fans and anyone catching onto this magnificent artist. When I first heard these songs, I had to reflect before commenting because I was busy reflecting on the career particulars of Cox and they did not sink in until I started listening again.

Music tends to wiz by these days and you have-to take the time to enjoy or it can get way. “In My Day” starts off with audience participation and almost feels like you’re on a live TV set witnessing a TV show taping. It’s just very show biz style, but that also suits it right down to the ground, almost as if he’s reliving his old times on the set of a show but poking a little fun at his young self even though longing for those times. In the process of this, all kinds of things are mentioned.

You really do want to hit repeat after the first track, but I let it each track play before I repeated them several times, getting something out of each listening session. The guitar playing is a treat in every song, so it must get some props for his abilities which have increased over years of playing. “Summer Rain” is an impressive folk ballad that probably wins me over the most, but only by an edge, as they all offer something substantial, something funny and something for just about every adult music lover. The blend is a proper one of seriousness and playfulness put to music.

“Silence” goes beyond a distant hill to a forest where dreams come true and you can close your eyes and imagine anything you want among the flowers, birds and tress, all of which are felt in the music and words. This is another amazing piece to wrap your ears around with Cox holding the magic wand. You feel his spoken words touch you as he carries on feather-lightly through this song, and time freezes for those few moments. But if that’s not enough, “Here I Am” features more of the same before sweeping you away with “At The End Of The Day.” Two more track you don’t want to miss before the album is released.
