Cosmic Suckerpunch have just released their Breathe EP, a collection of five tracks that provide listeners with a sense of the band, their influences, and where they may ultimately go in the years to come. That Voice is a straight-forward rock track that succeeds because it blends hints of alt-rock and psychedelic into the overall Ramones / Cure / Strokes vibe that is established. The Breathe EP succeeds because Cosmic Suckerpunch are able to touch upon each decade of rock, from the 60s to the current period. Glad You’re Here Now is a no-brainer rock radio rotation track, replete with a driving beat and alluring vocals. Imagine a meeting of the minds between The Cars, Joshua Tree-era U2, and The Psychedelic Furs for some idea about the band’s Breathe EP.
I Don’t Know is a brief moment of weakness for Cosmic Suckerpunch, as the band takes a page from the Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack. While the track is punctuated perfectly by the percussion, I feel that the interplay between the guitars and vocals is a little messy. The Breathe EP concludes with Mindbender, an amazing song that builds up to a similarly-fantastic conclusion. The slight brooding that the band touches upon with the vocals and angsty guitar work makes for a track that simply must be heard to be believed.
