El Presidente plays a weird style of rock music that does not have an immediate way to date it. There is a shrill type of vocals that would be equally as well placed in an act like The Darkness, while the simplistic style of the guitar and drums on a track like “Without You†reminds individuals of the Christian rock of the late nineties. In a way, El Presidente sounds…
It’s been a busy fall at the B9 and yesterday marked the release of Soul Control’s Cycles. With a sound that started out as more straight forward mid-90’s influenced hardcore, the quartet (comprised of Rory Van Grol on vocals, Eric Anagnostis on bass, Ryan Pitz on drums, and Jim Connolly on guitar) has emerged with a noisier, looser influence from bands like early Helmet, Jesus Lizard, and Unsane, but still…
Hot off a headlining slot on the Vans Warped Tour, Las Vegas’ most notorious and controversial rock band, Escape The Fate, have announced they will join Hollywood Undead and Atreyu on “The Vatos Locos Tour” this fall. Touring in support of their hit album, This War Is Ours, Escape The Fate continue their quest for worldwide domination. From their contentiously provocative video for their latest single, “10 Miles Wide,” to…
The back and forth sound of the opening strains of “Twill†is not much to excite individuals. Sure, there is a classic country type of sound that is dominant, but the dreamy vocals of Brood on this track do not really inflame listeners and cause them to listen in further. It is only when the guitars begin to tell a story when listeners begin to be roped in to “Ambassadorâ€.…
Honey-voiced songstress, Sara Lov, has been handpicked by longtime friend and collaborator Sea Wolf to open his seven-week musical voyage across the country. The national tour sets sail September 14 in Santa Barbara, just weeks after the re-release of Lov’s debut solo LP, Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming, out NOW via Filter US Recordings. Already a versatile performer, dating back to her stint as former lead singer of the revered dream-pop…

It always gives me chills to listen to what is essentially the last output by a band, and even more so when the band is so impressive. The opening track “Away We Drift†has vocals that are simply divine, but have a mission. This mission, something that can be chalked up as a victory for Chris, is to struggle amongst bombastic instrumentation and make eir vocals audible. The end of…
The Rural Alberta Advantage was born out of singer/songwriter Nils Edenloff’s exodus from the province that inspired the band’s name and many of the songs from their enthralling debut album, Hometowns. Edenloff grappled with homesickness after his move from Edmonton, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario in 2003. To cope with his loneliness and isolation in the ‘big city’, the shy songwriter penned a series of odes to his former home, celebrating…

Some of the same industrial-infused rock that was present on the last Alexander Hacke album, albeit couched with the same fuzz that marked a number of pop-industrial tracks of the mid-nineties. “After All†has a Bowie-esque feel to it that is bolstered by its Massive Attack-esque arrangement. Tracks like the self-titled go on the disc use an oddly-stacked backing beat to create a dance track in one of the most…
Los Angeles-based Princeton is releasing their debut record, Cocoon of Love, September 29th on Kanine Records. Growing up on Princeton Street in Santa Monica, the group now lives in an aging green house on a hillside in the Eagle Rock district of LA where their album was recorded. This week the band released its first vinyl release, a 7″ single on Kanine with the album track “Shout it Out” and…

Eleven Minutes Away’s opening to “Arson Followed Me Home†is interesting, as it uses tried and true metal riffs (through the medium of emo) to create a compelling post-hardcore track that is fueled most by its vocals. Throughout the tracks on “Arsons Followed Me Homeâ€, an energy flitters through that makes for a feeling that one cannot shake. Even in tracks that start out without much in the way of…
Back with another R&B-tinged, multi-layered track is singer/songwriter Rob Murat. The track is called “Ready To Love,” and features all things that have come to be quintessential of Rob Murat. The driving drums and bass line support a huge range of backing instrumentation that includes handclaps, entire horn sections, backup singers, and electric organ. Moreover, the song tackles one of Rob’s favorite subjects: relationships. While the hit “Dilemma” charted a…
As well as many other secrets found in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, this one also was destined to be revealed. Metal Mind Productions presents the complete collection of Steeplechase’s music which showcases a true legend of the 80’s rock era and a band worth remembering forever… The story of Steeplechase begun in 1975, when Kevin Brenner, an agent for the Creative Talent Associates (CTA – one of the…
Starting off heavily with a brooding bass line laid down by Cory and synths placed by Cian, “Blondes & Brunettes†is a wispy track, with a silence to the vocals that shows the hopelessness of the situation. While the track is beyond Spartan even after Brandon’s drums kick in, the energy exerted by the screamed-out vocals of Jacob pushes the track to the next level. The splashy nature of the…
