Robbie Basho – Venus in Cancer (CD)

Again, leave it to Tompkins Square to find a work done by a forgotten guitar hero from the sixties and catapult it back into social and popular significance. This time, “Venus in Cancer” is being re-released; this 1969 album shows Basho’s technique just as much as it shows eir mind and soul. While vocals could be placed on tracks like this, the result would be to paint over a Leonardo…

Bargain Music – American Born (CD)

The entire look of the CD seems to scream 1974 instead of the current time, and when individuals put the CD into their player and play the disc’s first track “American Born”, the impression is enforced. In a sense, Bargain Music play a style of music that blends together that of 4 Non Blondes with protest musicians like Phil Ochs and Pete Seeger. The vocals are easy to follow along…

Devendra Banhart – Cripple Crow (CD)

“Now That I Know” is slightly stronger of an opening than from any of Banhart’s previous album. There seems to be a little more Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kenny Wayne Shepherd than 1920s folk music on this opening track, making for something that does not sound quite as foreign as some of eir previous albums. The fuzziness of “Santa Maria De Feira” moves the sound of this disc into a…
