Bella / 2008 Lionsgate / 91 Minutes / http://www.bellathemovie.com / http://www.lionsgate.com /

Alejandro Gomez Monteverde introduced individuals to eir innovative style of film direction, and individuals have continually said that eir style is stellar; Bella was a winner of MovieGuide’s Best Picture, the Heartland Film Festival’s Grand Prize Award and was selected for the film festival at Austin’s own SXSW. The film features the story of a star soccer player that essentially sees a multi-million dollar contract go down the tubes as certain things happen in eir life that essentially turns good things sour.

In much the same way, a waitress is trying to make something of eir life, fighting against New York City for any bit of relief from the harshness of life. After the touch of fame disappears from Jose’s (the soccer player’s) life, Jose ends up working at a restaurant that is not too far away in terms from the waitress. Despite the fact that Jose could have it all, it is the connection that ey makes with the waitress that shows how great life can be. The story is pretty simple and is time tested in terms of the overall storyline, but Monteverde’s direction style makes this into a fresh type of story.

Individuals can get a better sense of how special this movie is with all of the special features that are present during this DVD. Obviously, there is an audio commentary with Monteverde eirself, along with a behinds the scene featurette that paints the film diffeently than merely watching the film would allow. The music video for Alejandro Sanz is a rarity that will please fans that liked the music in the film as well as fans of Sanzs. I cannot recall any better introduction to an individual director than Bella did for Monteverde. I would behoove anyone that is interested in good cinema or anyone that liked Bella to continue to check up on Monteverde in the years to come. This is due to the fact that there will be other Monteverde movies on the horizon, and if any of them are as solid as Bella was, they will be some of the best movies coming out that year. Eduardo Verastegui and Tammy Blanchard work perfectly together and show individuals that they deserve to be considered stars of the future. Check this movie out.
