National Lampoon Presents Cattle Call / 2008 Lionsgate / 87 Minutes / http://www.lionsgate.com /

“Cattle Call” is a film where Sherman (Andrew Katos, a relative newcomer to acting) and Glenn (Diedrich Baker, from The Drew Carey Show) attempt to find the girl of their dreams – their wet dreams. By creating a fake casting company, they are able to find a number of females that will hopefully fulfill their desires. However, Sherman and Glenn are not the only individuals that thought up this idea. Richie Ray (Thomas Ian Nicholas, Todd from Party of Five) is the third individual, and eir motives are much different than either Glenn and Sherman’s.

Instead of merely finding a sexual relationship, Richie Ray is looking for love. Ultimately, the plan goes awry as individuals start coming to understand their scheme, which results in revenge being taken on these three individuals by all the females that they scammed. The movie has a number of humor-filled moments and will provide the perfect Friday night, beer and pizza type of rental. Don’t go into Cattle Call looking for intricate emotions and complex desires; if you do, the film will be nowhere near as catchy as it truly is.

More than just providing the movie itself, Lionsgate has done well in pairing some up and coming actors with individuals that are trying to restart their career. This grouping of individuals makes for a more realistic movie than if better-established individuals were in the film, and makes this scheme seem as if it could conceivably happen. While some of the National Lampoon-line of films have not done the best business (I’m looking at you, Blackball), I believe that “Cattle Call” will start flying off the shelves just as soon as individuals get word about how funny the movie truly is. It provides a blend of humor that draws from Idiocracy, American Pie, and even the 40 Year Old Virgin, while still having an odd charm that is purely its own. In some ways, it even has a sixties film feel to it. I believe the language on the back of the DVD box describes that styles well –“Now these actresses don’t want the part, they want revenge. Hold on to your hearts and protect your private parts, this Cattle Call is gonna get rough”. Check the film out.
