When they were setting out to write As Above So Below Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor were intent to depart from their original sound; lush, haunted folk pop. As Above is a sparser, more minimal and much more electronic work than past albums. Yet while As Above So Below is a departure, what isn’t left behind is that unmatched, dreamy essence that arises when Fink and Taylor harmonize.
NPR featured the song “Red Balloon” as part of their All Songs Considered series, noting that the band “documents the collision between two distinct sensibilities: the sweetly airy, bittersweet pop of Maria Taylor and the buzzier, busier, frequently electronic sounds of Orenda Fink – in Azure Ray, they meet in the creamy, dreamy midpoint.”
