Birds & Batteries deliver rare visions and bold inventions – songs that are both intimate and epic, steeped in love and groove. Stray Light is the culmination of almost a decade of songwriting and album-making by composer Mike Sempert. Much of the album is about the push and pull between freedom and love/inspiration, with some wildly optimistic, magical futurism mixed in.
Praise for Stray Light
“Get your summer party playlist started with dance-inspiring, bright synthesizers and catchy pop-funk offered up by one of the Bay Area’s most impressive indie-pop experiments.” – Filter
“With singer Michael Sempert leading the way through the labyrinth of idyllic synths, Birds & Batteries sound like Cat Stevens if M83 were the backing band on the Harold And Maude soundtrack. It’s all very utopian and synth-driven, but with crunching guitars and a focused drum loop that work together to ground the flightiness.” – Prefix Mag
“Indie pop bliss, smashed with heavy electronic beats” – SF Bay Guardian
“This is a a song you will cherish as it spins around your brain. It is about letting go and giving in – to the layers, to the deep groove, to the patterns, to the dizzying fluidity. And then it’s over far too soon.” – SF Station
“If you’re into shiny synths, buzzing bass and vocals that are a little reminiscent of Peter Gabriel, these guys are about to win you over in a big way.” – Some Kind of Awesome
