A big part of parenting is keeping the children safe. Whether you are out and in the world as a family or in the home, safety is a big deal and you need to know how to ensure that your kids are happy, safe and healthy. Children are the biggest blessing that life has to offer, and also the most terrifying blessing! Children have no concept of danger when they are young, feeling what they want to do but not understanding what consequences are. We raise them to understand when things are dangerous and hope that they pay attention.

In the meantime, we have to do all that we can to combat the dangers wherever we go. Parents should always be one step ahead of their kids, and there is so much more to childhood safety than installing brilliant home security technology with SuddenLink.com. As a parent, you have to identify where things could be dangerous and, where possible, eliminate those dangers as soon as you notice. It’s the whole reason that we baby-proof when they’re not yet even old enough to roll over. Prevention is better than cure! So, what can you do to keep your little chicks safe in the nest?

  1. Trips & Falls. Children are clumsy. Their arms and legs grow at different rates to their bodies and it’s important that you understand how you can take away the potential for slips and falls while still needing them to fall once in a while to understand how to avoid danger themselves. Anchoring large pieces of furniture to walls to prevent them from tipping onto your children is of great importance, as is limiting how wide windows open in their bedrooms so that they cannot get through them.
  2. Medications & Poisons. Wherever you go, kids will always put things in their mouths to explore textures and tastes. Obviously, this is extremely dangerous when it comes to bleaches and medicines and the best way that you can avoid them doing this is to keep all cleaning chemicals locked away and all medicines in a cabinet out of reach.
  3. Electrics. Plugs with tiny holes are like magnets for little fingers. The thing is, you mustn’t head out to the hardware store and buy socket covers, as these can actually activate the electrical supply and cause more harm than good. Keep appliances out of reach and away from precarious edges, as well, so that you’re not worried about your children pulling large appliances down on themselves.
  4. Internet Safety. It’s not just little children we need to look out for, but our pre-teens and teens. The internet is a wide and scary place for a child and it’s a catalyst for playground bullying to follow them home. Helping them to understand how to keep safe online with the limited time that they get on the internet is vital for their emotional and mental wellbeing.

Your child’s safety is going to be your worry for their entire lives; while you can, keep them safe and close.
