It’s nearly 50 years after interracial marriages became legal in the United States since the US Supreme Court decriminalized interracial marriage. Three years ago, records showed that interracial and interethnic marriages in America had increased by fivefold, from 3% in 1967 to 17% in 2015.
As it is now, there are more interracial marriages. Everywhere you go in America, you’ll see an interracial couple – in the streets, on social media, in a religious place. It’s no longer a shocking sight to see a white woman in the mosque or an Asian woman or man in the church.
The case of Loving v. Virginia became a victory for many people in an interracial relationship. Reportedly, in 2015, 10 percent of all marriages in America were from interracial couples.
Generally, the most common type of intermarriage is between a white and a Hispanic of any race. Records show that relationships accounted for 10% of all intermarriages in 2015. Asian-white couples accounted for another 14% of intermarriages, while white-black couples made up 8%.
If you take a closer look at data on interracial marriage, you’ll find that more black men are married to people outside their race. The number has grown to about 20%. For Asians, women have shown great interest in interracial marriages. For whites and Hispanics, though, there’s little to no differences.
Interracial marriages have grown due to increased interaction between countries. People can easily travel to America, unlike in the past, for business or leisure. With more people settling in the United States, there’s bound to have interracial marriages.
Advancement in technology has also played a significant role in the growth of interracial marriages. People from all over the globe meet through social media platform, which eventually results in marriage. It’s also easy to have a long distance relationship and get to spend time with your partner every day. You can also easily meet someone from a different race through online dating platforms and speed dating events. People can meet in Interracial Dating Central – free interracial dating sites. The power of the Internet has made significant contributions. However, the number of interracial marriages from social platforms isn’t so high.
Human rights activists have contributed by enlightening communities of the disadvantages of stigmatizing interracial couples. People have become more aware. With less stigma to deal with, couples are no longer afraid to go public with their relationships. Activists are also helping interracial couples being shunned in communities fight for their rights. Also, there are many advertisements on TV that seem to encourage interracial marriages.
Another contributing factor to interracial marriages is the increase in the number of students from all over the globe. People come from different parts of the world to get their degree or masters in various schools and universities across the states. Eventually, they end up falling for a native girl and get married.
Despite the victorious precedent and technology, a few people in society term interracial relationships as an abomination. This radicalism, however, hasn’t stopped the growth of interracial marriages.
