Film art an introduction

Film art is the trapping that brings viewers into the film; one just has to remember the masterfully drawn backdrops that made the first Ghostbusters film pop off of the screen back in the 1980s. Before the days of bleeding edge computer graphics and whole backdrops generated without anything more than a green screen and a whole slew of server farms, a film had to make use of well-painted backdrops to lend an air of authenticity to the flick.

High art film is a genre that has a decent amount of risk without too much of a popular award associated with it. It seems as if the most well-known films are typically those that steer completely away from thoughtful dialogue, interesting scenes, and an eye for the camera work and the overall style of a film.

What is film art? Simply put, it’s the deep analysis of celluloid. Countless titles have been written that delve into directors like Hitchcock and Tarentino, looking at practically every second of footage from their corpus. It’s a bit like literature analysis; if you’ve ever read James Joyce’s Ulysses, you’ll understand.

What does an art director do in a film? Simply put, art directors are integral for adding an air of authenticity to the finished product. Providing the perfect set pieces as well as period-accurate design choices, costuming, and overall set outfitting are just part of the overall whole. Sure, those individuals that are associated with doing countless reads for parts or for scouting out investors for a finished film are important for ultimately getting the film from idea to finished product, but an apt art director is truly who will get the film into Canes and other award ceremonies.

The Film art mainstream presence has been increasing over the years. When Hollywood consisted of only a few companies creating pictures, there was little focus on making the best possible product – just the sort of pablum that would sell a lot of tickets. In an era where films can go viral outside of the mainstream, there has been a much more sustained push for imbuing the finished product with as much authenticity as possible. As a result, we see films break free of the monopoly of Hollywood movie houses and completely change the overall zeitgeist of the times.

Red Rock Entertainment is the perfect example of a company that is looking to shatter the overall stranglehold that some of the largest companies have on the creation of films, the hiring of actors,a nd the ultimate distribution of the finished product to movie theaters. By possessing a much higher standard in terms of art direction than even the most discerning productions.

Let us know what sort of movies have stood off of the silver screen for you this year. Are they smaller productions that may had a skillful hand with film art? What sort of role do you seem film art taking as computers continue to get more capable as the years continue to pass? Finally, could something like vocaloid stars become a thing as the blurring between human and computer continues to increase?
