After a considerable amount of coverage throughout the United Kingdom and the west coast, Waiting for Smith has created a new track in “Long Life”. Long Life has a compelling sound that draws upon mid-oughts alternative. The guitar work goes even further back in time to pull influence from 1960s country. Charismatic vocals flow effortlessly on the top of the track while taut instrumentation makes for a cohesive and coherent backdrop. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Long Life exudes a timeless sound long after its 2:30 run time would indicate. The bit of round / walking bass line that represents the single’s backbone will tattoo the song’s melodies deep into listeners’ minds. As one continues to play Long Life, bits of the act’s influences come more into view. This means that Rufus Wainwright and Paul Simon both come forth in subsequent experiences.

Waiting For Smith has commissioned a video for the song that highlights some of the themes are encountered. The visual element, directed by Lian Schreuder, blends a palette of super-saturated colors with a close, endearing approach that intersperses the band with scenes of everyday life and nature. This multi-media approach ensures that Long Life will stick around with listeners long after the song ceases to play.

The single works well when compared to other tracks from Waiting For Smith’s discography. Take the band’s Song for Grace, an effort that showcases the diametric opposite of tempo and influence from those encountered during Long Life. While there are some similarities that can be picked out between these two polar opposites – the stellar production and crisp playing style of the band, for two – these efforts are integral to indicate how extensive Waiting For Smith’s sound truly is. Other efforts, such as Trade It In, could easily slot into high rotation on rock radio playlists. Separate from other efforts on that list, this WFS cut’s incorporation of horns and otherworldly synths gives it replay value for weeks, if not months.
