Buying furniture for a restaurant seems like it would be a relatively easy task. Once you have a theme or a vision for your space, you just buy whatever pieces you want. While that’s part of the process, there’s more to it. You want to make sure that your space is the best that it can be, so in order to do that, you need to take the necessary time to pick the right furniture.

While the furniture’s looks are an important characteristic to keep in mind when shopping, there are other factors that are equally, if not more important. Additionally, there are more components to think about than just the piece as a whole. You also need to think of things like the cushions, how long the piece will last, how can you fix damages that occur, and others.

One piece of furniture that has a few components is the table. When buying a table you should always look at both the legs (or base) and the table top. People don’t always know what to look for, so here is a list of the top things that you need to know before buying tables for your restaurant.

  1. Material: The material used on any table top, regardless of where it is, should be well protected. There are going to be extremely hot items on it, as well as heavy ones occasionally, so it’s crucial to get a material that can handle these extreme conditions. Not only do restaurant table tops experience heat and weight, but also they get wet and depending on their placement within the restaurant, are exposed to sunlight. These can also be damaging elements that you need to keep in mind.

There are a few table top options to choose from. The main three are wood, stone, and metal. These are the most common table top materials, and for a good reason. Since these are all naturally occurring materials, they’re clearly able to handle all of the above elements and then some. Having a tabletop out of these materials is also nice because they require little maintenance.

The table tops that you should try and avoid (at least for furnishing your restaurant) are plastic and wood laminate. Even though laminate is a great substitute for real wood, it can get damaged fairly easily. Water and heat can cause the material to peel and bubble. However, if you still choose to use laminate, just be sure it’s higher quality.

  1. Durability: Obviously you want the furniture in your restaurant to last longer. The longer it lasts, the less you have to worry about finding a replacement piece. When looking for pieces, you want to look for ones that are nicely made. These pieces will last at least twice as long as lower quality, or mass-produced pieces. Look at the way the piece is put together, otherwise known as the joints. Usually these will tell you all you need to know about the piece.
  2. Replaceable: Even if your tables are super high-quality and will last for years, it’s always a good idea to think of how you can replace them. Whether it’s due to age or an emergency, it’s always best to be able to replace parts of your furniture instead of the whole piece. This will save you the headache of trying to find the exact table and also save you money, as buying replacement pieces are cheaper than buying a whole new item.
