A large move is usually followed by a large amount of insecurity about your surroundings.  We all want to get to know the others in our community, yet it can be hard to figure out where to go when you can’t tell anyone.

These are some of the best ways to get hotspot recommendations in your area and hopefully make some friends along the way!

Check Neighborhood Apps

Although this may feel obvious, many people overlook this highly useful tool!  Sign up for whatever neighborhood watch, a neighborhood chat, app, or website that you can find, and then look around for suggestions!  Sometimes it’s as simple as posting that you’re looking for help, but you can also try to dig and find tips from posts that other people are making.

Look At Google Reviews

Google reviews are awesome for looking for places with tons of visits and lots of positive reviews.  Use google maps to find what businesses are closest to you, and from there, look at what restaurants, cafes, bars, and clubs have the most ratings and most stars.  This is a quick way to find what businesses are the most popular without worrying about talking to anyone else first.

Check Local Tourism Board Sites

Of course, local tourism board sites have a bad reputation for being out of date and geared more towards older crowds, but that’s not true for every city.  Give your local city tourism and traveling websites a chance, and try to find what options are either the highest-ranked or the highest-rated.  If you’re lost when considering all of the options, it’s okay to try and narrow it down by reviews or even expense.  What matters most is finding a business that you’re interested in.

Check Locally Tagged Posts

If none of these sites interest you, it’s okay to consider checking the local tagged posts on Instagram or Twitter!  The best times to check are Friday and Saturday evenings since people are more likely to be social at these times.  If you’re more into looking for good hiking locations, check Saturday or Sunday mornings!  The good thing about these tags is that people will often tag what city they’re in and what business they’re at.

Make Friends With Your Neighbors

Although pop culture says that cities are lonely, they don’t have to be!  Getting to know your neighbors is one of the most important things you can do.  Whether you’re in one of countless Charleston apartments or you just bought a home in the suburbs, it’s okay to admit that you’re new to the area.  Reach out to neighbors when you see them out and about in the neighborhood, and don’t be afraid to go to local community meetings.  Making friends and meeting locals will help you become more attuned to the local nightlife.

Getting to know a new city is exciting and terrifying at the same time!  Although you might want to give up and hang out online, don’t give up!  A little digging might find the dream hotspot for you.
