You are craving for metamorphosis, but you’re a curlyhead? Worry not – there are hair extension methods that will guarantee you a stunning look. We’ve gathered some handy tips to make choosing the extensions easier.
When googling hair extensions, we usually see the straight types first. Some people are even convinced that there is no way to extend the curls since they’ve never seen such extensions.
That is obviously false. Curly extensions exist and have been gaining increasing popularity lately. That made many companies rethink their assortment and extend their offer with a wider variety of curl types and colors.
Straight vs. curly – what are the differences?
Curly hair requires a different approach and treatment than straight one. For instance, you should brush it only when wet and avoid all the SLES/SLS formulas. For a long time, the haircare industry would advertise straight-hair-oriented products as a universal solution. Only recently, the needs of curls have started to be addressed.
When it comes to hair extensions, you may choose one of two solutions. You can either buy regular extensions and curl them or choose those which are already curly. The first method is more time-consuming, but it lets you be more creative.
How to curl straight hair extensions?
The same way that you work with your natural hair! You can either make them wet, braid them and leave for the night or use heat treatment. To make it easier, you can use the wig stand. The first method will result in mermaid waves, and the second – in more springy curls.
Important note – the hair has to be natural! Synthetic hair cannot be treated with heat, and braiding won’t have much effect on them.
How to choose curly hair extensions?
Curly extensions are generally quite a new thing, so many producers are still developing their range of available products to adjust them to the needs of curlyheads.
The first step is to define your curl type. The most common code for curls includes a number and a letter. Numbers stand for:
- Wavy
- Curly
- Coily
And the letters stand for the definition of the curls. That’s how all the variants are usually described:
2a – slight waves
2b – soft waves
2c – defined waves
3a – classic curls
3b – spiral curls
3c – corkscrews
4a – slightly coiled
4b – kinky
4c – super kinky
The distributors of hair extensions use the same code to mark their products, so once you figure out your type, shopping will be much easier.
Which method to choose?
With curly hair, you can choose all the methods destined for straight hair. The only ones we wouldn’t recommend is hot fusion or keratin pre bonded hair extensions. Curls are already thin and dry and such treatment won’t be good for them. If you want a long-term effect, it’s better to choose micro-rings.
Clip invariants are a perfect solution for an instant metamorphosis. If your hair has many volumes, blending them in will be super easy, and the effect will be beautiful! For the thin curls with less volume, we would rather recommend the weave-in method.
And the length? That’s totally up to you! 24 inch hair extensions are the most popular option, but you can get much longer ones!
