Geno Marriott’s new music video for his single “Take the Time: Smell the Roses” definitely lives up to its title in more ways than one, starting with the way it uses tempo to get us to appreciate the intricacies of nature on screen. Even though the music is merely a soundtrack, presented by Marriott himself in the video, it feels embedded with every frame of earthly beauty we see in this piece. We’re made to slow things down and enjoy the world around us if for only a fleeting moment, which is precisely what Marriott wanted us to do through this song.

Instrumentally, this is smooth jazz at its smoothest, cratering us with a harmony between players that wouldn’t be nearly as brooding were it not for the conceptual arrangement that Marriott provides us with here. He’s got such an even-handed approach when it comes to rhythm that it’s hard to tell where his parts are ending and those of his band are just beginning, which isn’t to say that this mix isn’t giving definition to even the smallest of parts in the song. This is a perfect track for those who have missed the intimacy of club shows in the past two years, and especially those sharing the song with a romantic partner.
The concept of keeping things as simple as possible has done Geno Marriott well in “Take the Time: Smell the Roses,” and I think this is just a glimpse into what he’s going to be producing in the future. He’s got so much raw talent refined inside of a short single here that I really think he could thrive if allowed to present us with something more progressive and full-bodied, perhaps throughout an entire LP. I’m interested in seeing where he goes from here, and those who aren’t should check out “Take the Time: Smell the Roses” to see what I’m talking about.
