Magic is in the air in the new music video for Fresh Da Zoe’s “Voodoo Flow,” and although the wicked imagery on screen is quite the reference to the occult on its own, the hypnotic nature of the beat in this single is a far more powerful element. Fresh Da Zoe is pulling out all the creative stops here – visuals, a punchy rhythm, even a linguistic fluidity that makes some of the most agile players in or outside of his scene sound pretty slow by comparison, but while he’s throwing everything but the kitchen sink into this effort, the end product isn’t steeped in indulgence.

Both the video and the single enjoy a terrific production quality that wraps us up in the narrative before we ever get to the climax of the song, but I think the former is an especially enticing document of who Fresh Da Zoe is as an artist. He’s getting filthy with these verses, but when coupled with the relaxed attitude he has on-screen, it’s obvious we aren’t listening to someone who can’t conjure up a spellbinding verse on the fly. This rapper knows how to rehearse, but more importantly, he knows how to use his natural gifts to express something.
Rap is boasting quite the crowded talent pool at the moment, and yet I don’t see Fresh Da Zoe being able to keep his video for “Voodoo Flow” a secret trapped within the underground culture that spawned his music in the first place. His profile is incredibly indie, but much as we’ve seen with a lot of cloud rappers and alternative trap artists coming up on the east and west coasts the same, the charisma he has to offer is just too grand to remain concealed within an otherwise insular music scene. Honestly, this single/video combo could definitely put Fresh Da Zoe over the top.
