Vancouver Island’s LNDN values artistic brevity rather than the all too typical ostentatious pop architecture so many other artists erect. The introspective message behind his new single “Life Like That” is universal enough that it will strike a chord with a wide audience and the accessible arrangement is a perfect vehicle for LNDN.

He’s released an accompanying video for the track. Graham Dorsay directed the video and it’s a notable achievement by any measure. An indie artist producing a video full of such polish and atmosphere illustrates how the last twenty plus years have smashed the arbitrary borders separating the well-known from the obscure. You don’t have to be on a major label and appear on major networks to build a reputation for quality capable of standing alongside anyone.

“Life Like That” has a certain amount of hushed seriousness, but it’s remarkably light on its feet. Listeners can hear from the outset that the song’s focus lands on LNDN’s voice and message, but the musical arrangement is a critical reason why it has such a delicate touch. The piano and later synth accompaniment surround the song with a deeply felt and sparkling warmth that invites listeners to come closer. The transition from its relatively sparse instrumental beginnings into the much fuller second half. Exceptional production values are another critical reason why the music makes such a positive impression.

Message is king here, however. LNDN’s “Life Like That” is philosophical, without a doubt, but never in any sort of pretentious or stilted way. Its reflective qualities are accessible to anyone who has felt life’s disappointments as well as tasting its sweeter moments and the conversational language is well suited for communicating with his audience. LNDN’s delivery is, of course, the all important component for determining the success or failure of this song.

He is more than up to the challenge. The hushed manner he uses opening the song never mars his clarity and LNDN has the necessary skill to adapt to the song’s musical peaks and valleys. An ethereal spirit colors some aspects of the performance, but other moments are thoroughly grounded. It is often said, but seldom true – there is something for everyone who enjoys music, both casual and devoted listeners, in LNDN’s “Life Like That”.

The video accentuates the song’s strengths. There’s no overshadowing. Dorsay and LNDN, along with the clip’s many other collaborators, are obviously working well together in an effort to provide a seamlessly complementary visual document for the song. The production quality, props, wardrobe, color composition, every element of the promotional video is clearly labored over yet has a natural and inviting feel.

It is quite an achievement for this young artist and there are undoubtedly more to come. In dark days such as this, we should never forget the resilient attributes of the human spirit rather than succumbing to fatalism or giving up in general. LNDN is a searcher, a seeker, and his music will connect with anyone who shares a similar point of view.
