Playradioplay – The Frequency EP (CD)

“Bad Cops Bad Charities” reminds me of HelloGoodbye and The Rocket Summer. That is to say that PlayRadioPlay mixes emo stylings with an electronic component that is comparable to acts like Fischerspooner. The quirkiness of the vocalist of PlayRadioPlay seems to pull itself towards that of a Blink 182. Thus, “Bad Cops Bad Charities” is an odd Frankenstein’s monster of a track. The band steps strongly here, but there needs…

A Planet for Texas – You Can Still Rock In America. (CD)

2000 Diaphragm records. 13 Songs from this 4 piece act from Columbus. The CD is a scant 32:45, making each song around 2 and a half minutes long. The cover has boobies on it. Very good guitars that match equally good guitars, making a sound much like Hilljack. A Planet For Texas are a fairly large band, as they know the Forty-Fives (NG Records) and have been reviewed by both…

UNIVERSAL ORDER OF ARMAGEDDON READY DOUBLE 7″ ‘LIVE WFMU’, EMBARK ON US TOUR THIS WEEK

Lost unexpectedly, after having not played live for 16 years, Universal Order of Armageddon (U.O.A.), with VERY short notice, recently played two sold out shows in July 2010: one in Baltimore at the Whartscape Festival and a second at Death By Audio in Brooklyn N.Y. with No Age. In the final planning stages of this most recent Whartscape by the Wham City collective Dan Deacon asked if U.O.A. would consider…

A Planet for Texas – Sprechen Sie Rock? (CD)

2002, Diaphragm Records. This was the last CD I had to review from the piles of mail that my mom didn’t bother sending me. And boy am I happy that this was the last CD I still had to review, as this CD definitely rocks. Don’t expect the sound of “You Can Still Rock in America”, as this album is more poppy, more clean sounding, and if you can believe…

Introducing THE BAND OF HEATHENS

The guys in the Band of Heathens are fond of saying they became a unit by accident. But that’s like saying the Big Bang was an accident. Unplanned, maybe, but hardly random. One might even argue that a kind of destiny was involved. The merger of singer/songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist and Colin Brooks, with bassist Seth Whitney and drummer John Chipman, from their respective solo careers and bands may…

They Came To Play (DVD)

There is a sense present among a great segment of the population that those individuals that are into classical music, be it playing or just listening, are somewhat aloof and are not in touch with the rest of society. They Came To Play, a documentary surrounding a number of amateurs looking to win the Van Cliburn Foundation’s Piano Competition, so compelling. When focusing in on each of the different contestant,…

COMEBACK KID RELEASE VIDEO FOR ‘G.M. VINCENT & I’

Comeback Kid has released a video for “G.M. Vincent & I” off their latest release Symptoms & Cures. This live collage captures the intensity and emotion portrayed in vocalist Andrew Neufeld’s lyrics as the song tells the story of the van accident he and long-time friends/labelmates Grave Maker suffered. The video will exclusively be on the band’s FACEBOOK (Facebook.com/comebackkid) page for the next week. Log in, become a fan by…

Planeside – Milk (CD)

Planeside starts off their “Milk” with a blend of styles that tie together the powerful arena rock of Foo Fighters with the dominant emo rock movement in popular music. Thus, during “My Sweet Revenge”, individuals’ heads bob as the emotive force of Dave’s vocals tie listeners in for the long haul. “Aunt Polly’s Dream” makes Planeside into an even-more powerful act, aligned more along the axis of Sum 41 than…

Paper Man (DVD)

Paper Man is a film that I felt completely went under the radar when it received a limited release in April 2010. MPI is releasing the DVD (and Blu-Ray) of the film, and hopes that the title gains cult status. At a quick glance, the cast is strong enough to match that of a Farrelly Brothers or Apatow flick; Kieran Culkan, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Jeff Daniels all play…

Place of Skulls – The Black Is Never Far (CD)

What type of metal is this? With Place of Skull’s first track on “The Black Is Never Far”, “Prisoner’s Creed” the band skillfully meshes together progressive metal with sludge and a more contemporary idea of rock to create something that is accessible without being devoid of content. With later tracks like “Sense of Divinity” the formula is not changed in the slightest. Why this works for Place of Skulls and…

ondon’s Second Head releases follow-up EP

In October, London trio SECOND HEAD released ‘TREEZ’, their second EP, which was recorded and produced at Valley Studios by Ben Startup. It’s poppier than their debut EP in places, noisier in others and features Jon Jackson (Kate Nash, Loverman, The Receeders). Second Head is Emma Browning (bass, vox), Wim Eden (bass, guitar, drums), various live drummers and the occasional guitarist. Second Head formed in May 2010; they are currently based…

Pitty Sing – Self/Titled (CD)

Sounding like a mix between old-school U2 and The Cure, Pitty Sing comes to the forefront of the synthesizer-kiddos while mixing in an aural sound not unlike the bands off of any of John Hughes’ movies’ soundtracks. “Radio” sounds especially like “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by the Simple Minds, even down to the chirpiness of the track. Continuing that general sound, these looking-back individuals try to recreate the melodrama…

NewU Fitness First Yoga and Pilates (Nintendo Wii)

There are a number of games for all current-gen consoles that claim to provide fitness to those that play them. NewU Fitness First Yoga and Pilates immediately comes forth with a sort of focus that none of these other titles have. Pitch Black – This Is The Modern Sound (CD)

I was a little weary of Revelation Records after their last album, Call Me Lightning’s “The Trouble We’re In”, really failed to impress me. However, I have a feeling that Revelation’s stock is rising, specifically because of their release of two albums: this album, as well as the new The Plot to Blow Up The Eiffel Tower. I knew that this album had to be good after the first few…
