When it comes to picking up hot travel destinations, usually European and South Asian destinations for the abundance of natural beauty and activities they offer to the visitors. Typically, American holiday destinations are mostly known for super expensive beaches such as Bora Bora, and that too provide very limited entertainment options for travelers. However, in the recent past, more tourists have been trying to experiment at the less touristy destinations, which has resulted in new tourist towns popping up as a consequence.

One of the best examples in this regard is San Diego. A city that was nothing beyond a full and dull naval port has suddenly emerged as one of the hottest beach destinations. San Diego is located towards the north of Mexican border and is easily accessible. Moreover, it is also way cheaper than the more exotic beaches in the region and offers a variety of attractions ranging from nightclubs to theme parks, which makes it an ideal destination for a family getaway.

How to Move Around?

San Diego happens to have a good network of public transport. If you are traveling alone, hopping on the buses and shuttles would be a great idea. However, if you are on a family trip or a larger group, it is highly recommended that you rent a car for yourself. When you are in San Diego, you would want to cover a lot of attractions including a beach, Lego Land, the malls and the clubs. Most of the places are located far apart and traveling on buses with kids and luggage will not only be pricier but will also make your travel more hectic especially with cranky toddlers.

Moreover, you will have to abide by the bus schedules, renting a car will allow you to move freely and comfortably as per your schedule. You can easily carry car seats and let your kids nap at the back. If you wish to use that option, you can easily find car rental in San Diego airport as soon as you get to the arrival lounge.

Where to Stay

There is no doubt that the prime limelight of San Diego has always been it is pristine beachfront. However, the beach resorts are a bit too expensive. If budget is not a problem for you and your main aim of the trip to unwind at beach decks, then, by all means, hotels with beach access are the best place to stay. However, if you are a family holiday on a budget, an Airbnb at a more central location would be a better option. Remember that all major attractions such as the zoo, theme parks, beach, etc. are located far apart. This means that if you are not using the car rental option, shuttling around with kids can be very exhausting and even expensive. In that case, choose a location that makes your movement between the attractions easier and shorter.

Save Up on Tickets

Family visits to theme parks can be very expensive. However, a bit of research can help you save on your ticket costs. Instead of buying the full priced admission tickets at the park counters, always search online for any deals. Sites such as Expedia and Groupon often have discounted passes that can help you save. Likewise, your hotel tour desk might also be able to offer you some great packages that might help you save up.
