Mr Russell is the latest album from Overlord Gruff, starting out with Floatin. Savage immediately cuts to the bone. The haunting keys that plays in the background is the perfect beat to allow for Overlord Gruff’s flow to shine. While there are a number of female vocal samples popping up art points during this track, there’s a cohesion that ensures that they contribute mightily to the finished effort. Black Superman slows things down a bit to call back to the early-to-mid 1990s California sound. The presence of Maddmovin Da Loc as a feature on Black Superman further imbues the track with a complexity that ensures listeners will be able to spin the track throughout the summer.
No Love utilizes the repetition of the main phrase and a collection of Overlord Gruff’s favorite things to great effect. The gritty lyrical content present in this track is given a bit of additional oomph through the single’s production. She Heard About Me comes forth with a different feel than a good amount of the tracks on Mr Russell. There’s a bit of the Louisiana style mixed in with the Cali approach of Overlord Gruff; complex pacing here makes for a track that shines when incorporated alongside other rap tracks on the radio. Put That on Somethin has Overlord Gruff bludgeon listeners with his bars. Thee coupling of religion with hard-hitting content makes the effort pop that much more. All I Know keeps the momentum of Mr Russell high; the dropping in a cell ring to the track will increase heart rate of listeners just as the album begins to come to a close.
