Sitting Down with Perth’s Simon Kelly

Hello, Simon. What’s happening musically in Perth in July?  It is cold and wet this time of year so things slow down a little bit. The weather in Perth is beautiful for most of the year and there is lots of outdoor gigs and festivals but the flip side is that people don’t tend to go out as much during winter.

Whorrifick Vomit EP

The titular track on the Vomit EP showcases a sharp-tongued, intense rap style that takes an equal amount of early Eminem, Brotha Lynch Hung, and Tech N9ne. Using a sort of Spartan production for this introductory track, what Whorrifick does is force listeners to mull over and chew upon each bar. The focus on lyrical content is a bold move – it means that each line has to be flawless –…

Texture & Light – Inner Space Odyssey

Theft of the Sky is a slinky rock track that links together the electro-pop of acts like INXS with bits of 1990s acts like Stabbing Westward and Savage Garden. By making something old and frayed new and alluring, what Texture & Light do on their Inner Space Odyssey is immediately impacting and appeasing to a wide swath of fans. Pictures to Burn builds upon the same electro-infused style to make something hauntingly…

Destihl’s Tripel, Best in Class

Over the course of the last few years, we’ve had the chance to review a number of Destihl’s offering. However, I believe that Destihl has outdone themselves with their Tripel, a 11% effort that is able to go down easy while possessing considerable depth to the flavors that one will experience within each 500 mL bottle. There are hints of Belgian yeast dryness, sweetness, and bits of citrus fruit flavors…

Dr. Dabber’s Budder Cutter

Dr. Dabber’s Budder Cutter is a tool that should be utilized by anyone that wishes to make the dosing of concentrates constant. The device (retailing at around $50) is a tool that allows for one to choose the head that best doles out, cuts, or otherwise interacts with the concentrate, no matter the viscosity. The tool heats up to the optimum temperature quickly without becoming too hot for the product. The ability to…

Tesla – Psychotic Supper 25th Anniversary Edition

The third studio record from Sacramento-based Tesla, may not have offered a chart-topping ballad like 1989s “Great Radio Controversy” (“Love Song” was a staple of just about every high school mix tape for years on) or gotten the MTV love that Five Man Acoustical Jam warranted a year later, but song for song, “Psychotic Supper” is the band’s best record. Packaged by their label at the time as yet another…

Steven Lamar was one of the individuals on the ground floor when the Beats By Dre headphones were changing the world, and he has lent his influence to a new product, the Roam Ropes Wireless Headphones. We are pleased to report that the Roam Ropes are well worth their $199 list price. The economics of the earbuds are considerable meaning that there is a great fit in an individual’s ears…

Sara Watkins – Young in All the Wrong Ways (CD)

Sara Watkins has called “Young in All the Wrong Ways” a break up album with herself. “I looked around and realized that in many ways I wasn’t who or where I wanted to be. It’s been a process of letting go and leaving behind patterns and relationships and in some cases how I’ve considered myself.”

Everpresent – Omega Point

Everpresent’s Hyponotic is a track that skillfully blends electronic and pop music styles from the 1980s, 1990s, and more contemporary sounds. This means that this introductory track is able to call forth comparisons to INXS, Peter Gabriel, Savage Garden and Linkin Park all in the space of three minutes. Dreamscape is a refreshing of the mid-1990s Pet Shop BOys and drum n bass styles into something brilliant; the strong female…

Bankewitz – Push it. Shake it. Feel it.

Bankewitz creates a track so infectious with his latest, Push it. Shake it. Feel it., that fans will be singing the hook through autumn. The momentum that is accumulated here keeps listeners on the dance floor. Bankewitz’s output works well in EDM and pop genres; the instrumental/vocal dichotomy established here pushes each side to an entirely higher plateau.
