Planet Verge #4

Planet Verge #4 ($2, Planet Verge, 15 Albert Terrace, Bloomfield, NJ 07003) This zine is laid out to high heaven. The pieces in Planet Verge really go all over the place, from the Beverly Hills 90210 Brainteaser to famous actors who have not won an Oscar to a bunch of interviews…

Best OL Cas

With the laws in place now that provide problems to the owners of online casinos that still accept players from the United States, it is not surprising that a number of casinos have dropped United States players from their acceptable lists. However, there are a number of sites still open to United States players, and Best Casino Spot provides some sort of idea what sites those are. However, this is…

Make A Rising – Infinite Ellipse and Head with Open Fontanel

Make A Rising – Infinite Ellipse and Head with Open Fontanel  / 2008 High Two / 10 Tracks / http://www.myspace.com/makearising / Make A Rising is an odd band. A track like “All One or None” is a track that has little more to it than a plinking piano and a falsetto vocal that imbues the track with a decidedly fifties flair. While the instrumentation does not have any easy referent,…

Festival – Come, Arrow, Come!

Festival – Come, Arrow, Come! / 2008 Language of Stone / 10 Tracks / http://www.funwithfestival.com / “Come, Arrow, Come” could easily be an album from the late fifties or early sixties. This is because the opening track, “Fair and True”, has a cultish/religious sound to it that will remind individuals of a mix of the New Christy Minstrels and the folk music that would come a few short years after…

Village Voice – “[Music for Tourists] It’s soft, honest, and wholeheartedly intimate” Time Out NY – “His strong command of the piano and quirky operatic voice call to mind Regina Spektor. Like her, he combines classical sensibilities with folky ones, inviting cello lines and harmonium drone into his ballads” NPR Song of the Day – “Garneau relies on minimal instrumentation — a smattering of piano and cello, to go with…

Pink #3

I have no clue where I got this magazine, but this is by far the oddest magazine I’ve ever received. While the editors priorities seem to be in the right place, and she seems to be progressive in most issues, she has some serious issues with abortions, trying to make a case that using aborted babies for research and profit is wrong. She specifically bashes the religious right in the…

K Records Band Desolation Wilderness Set To Release 7 Inch

Desolation Wilderness: Until Forever – Nicolaas Zwart began recording as Desolation Wilderness in 2005, mapping a course without compass or sextant. The tools are vibraphone, tape delay, glockenspiel, electric guitar. A synthesizer, too. Voice plays its role, though Desolation Wilderness speaks volumes through audio themes without words. The themes of Desolation Wilderness are rarified and also mundane, the usual in common with literature, art and the midway at Coney Island.…

Story of the Year – Our Time Is Now

Story of the Year – Our Time Is Now / 2008 Image / 100 Minutes / http://www.image-entertainment.com / I had no idea that Story of the Year had been around since 1995. I also thought, for whatever reason, that the band was from Canada. Anyways, “Our Time Is Now” showcases what happened to the band in the two years after SOTY enjoyed their tenth anniversary as a band. October 2005…
