Rye IPA (Thump Keg Brewing Company)

Thump Keg Brewing’s Rye IPA is brewed in collaboration with George Dickel. The beer pours with a very root beer / dark brown coloration and a top of tannish head that gradually increases to about a finger’s width amount on the top of the glass. Thump Keg’s Rye IPA has a sweet nose that concludes with the faintest hint of hops. Strong vanilla flavors permeate this beer, while the 50…

Spencer Trappist Ale

The beer pours with an opaque gold / orange coloration and a small amount of persistent head. There is a small amount of lacing as one continues to sip the beer, demarcating the size and time of each of the prior drinks. The nose of Spencer Trappist Ale links together hints of sugar and citrus fruits with hints of cereal and malt; the first sip of the beer showcases a…

Galaxy High

There is a strong hop nose that wafts after opening the can, providing imbibers with some sense of the trip that they will take during their time with Galaxy High, MadTree Brewing’s latest. Galaxy High pours with a dark orange / gold coloration and an off-white head that gradually dissipates. There is an alcohol burn that warms, hiding the 120 IBU well. As Galaxy High continues to warm, there is…

DownTown Mystic, Turn Around and Go

DownTown Mystic has continued their string of hard-hitting singles with their latest single, Turn Around and Go. This track links together the masterful work of Robert Allen with a band of musicians that include PJ Farley of Ra/Trixter fame on bass, Tommy Mastro from The Discontent, and Bruce Engler filling out the vocal side of things. The production of Turn Around and Go allows the constituent elements of the band to shine…

Saranac Legacy IPA

Saranac has re-released the brewery’s century-old IPA recipe and has christened it their Legacy IPA. This beer pours with an amber to gold coloration and a tenacious off-white head that slides down the glass. There is a slight hop presence to the beer’s initial nose that is paralleled when one takes their first sip; the beer contains a bevy of hops (Citra, Cluster, Golding, and Simcoe among others). There…

World Wild Caribbean Gold EP Review

Poolside starts out Caribbean Gold and provides listeners with a brief introduction to the eclectic style of Australia’s World Wild. The track ties together the laidback style of acts like Porter Robinson and Chromeo with hints of Random Access Memories-era Daft Punk. The alluring vocals are a perfect fit with a late-eighties / “West End Girls”-type of Pet Shop Boys.

Paula D Tozer Cain’s Regret EP

Cain’s Regret is a track that possesses a tremendous narrative aspect that will have listeners focused in from the onset of Paula D. Tozer’s latest EP, Cain’s Regret. Tozer’s vocals are a blend of pop and country artists, meaning that the titular effort is reminiscent of Suzanne Vega, Stevie Nicks, and Reba McEntire.

At the Top of the Pyramid is a title that anyone hat has been through high school will be able to intensely and completely understand. The film focuses on those issues that are deep in the psyche of all teenagers, including feelings of belonging, depression, and an overall mis-match between what one feels and sees in the mirror. The title focuses on Jamie Parker, a beloved member of the high…

Sakima Interview

Hello, Sakima. Your current album is The Process. What significance does the release’s title hold for you? The title is everything. The Process is the result of my growth in music. This is the first album that I truly produced and almost fully created myself. I grew from a rapper to an artist. And that’s what the title reflects. The music on the album is the result of my process…

Double Dread Imperial Red Ale

Double Dread, Mad River Brewing’s Imperial Red Ale, pours with an incredibly dark brown to red coloration and an off-white head that winds its way down the glass as one continues to drink the beer. There is a decent sweetness, surprising considering the higher ABV of the brew (8.6% ABV); one will be unable to discern the 8.6% ABV of Double Dread until a while after they have completed the…

Smuttynose Imperial Stout

Smuttynose’s Imperial Stout, the latest in their Big Beer Series, pours dark brown to black with little in the way of tannish/brown head. There are rich chocolate and malt sides to the nose, while the beer does well to unite the hop and more sweet elements into a luxurious and dangerous package. An alcohol bite concludes each quaff and refreshes palettes for subsequent sips; additional flavors present in this beer…

Life Partners DVD

This unassuming relationship comedy from novice writer/director Susanna Fogel could have gone either way, but thanks to a perfectly cast Gillian Jacobs (Community) and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) as the co-leads, she ended up with a charming, if light, take on best friends navigating relationships in their late 20’s.

Long Knives “This Is Your Life” E.P. Review

For a debut E.P. Long Knives already know exactly what they are which is a female fronted band wanting to ride comfortably between the lines of punk rock and a radio friendly mainstay. That’s a sincerely difficult task to complete because I originally was not convinced that this album was going to be worth the listen but they have those reliable hooks which appeal to everyone.

Blanche De Chambly

Blanche De Chambly pours with an incredibly small amount of head and a hazy golden coloration. There is a little sugar and orange that can be discerned from the beer’s nose, while the first cursory sips yield hints of wheat, citrus fruits, and sweeter flavors. The beer is refreshing and sits in a position between more wheaty and fruity efforts; there is a considerable constellation of flavors that one can…
