Life can be gross. We tend to think of dirt, germs, and grime all living outside our house. Since we regularly sweep, do dishes, and wash our windows (okay, maybe we don’t regularly wash our windows) we have this fantasy that our home is a lot cleaner than a public place. Depending on the public place, that might be true. But there are quite a few crevices in your home that need a good cleaning, and you’ve probably never even thought of them.

Toothbrushes

Ick. It’s funny that something we put in our mouth, every day, never gets cleaned. We wash the dishes we eat off of, but we don’t clean the toothbrush that’s had our dry saliva on it all day. A good rinse helps of course, but it always a good idea to get that toothbrush cleaned once a month or so. Just douse it in rubbing alcohol. And then make sure you rinse it. Really well.

Vacuum filters

You may not have realized it, but you can actually clean your vacuum filter in the dishwasher. Not only does this save you money, it helps keep allergens at bay before it’s time to replace the filter.

Your attic

You ignore your attic. Santa can land on it. That’s about all you use it for. Your attic, however, might be full of stuff you don’t want, like insulation full of asbestos, or dead mice. That’s not in any way a project you want to tack on your own, so whether you live in Denver or Los Angeles, attic cleaning is something to look into.

Your phone

Probably one of the dirtiest things you touch every day, it’s a good idea to rub that phone down with hand sanitizer or something. We tend to think our phones are as clean as we are, since they hang around on our person all day. What? We showered. The phone must be clean, too. Then, of course, we realize that all the germs and bacteria we touched on public handrails and bathroom handles… all made it onto our phone.

Your machines

Plenty of people use humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air purifiers, or other machines. Since these machines are all affecting the quality of our air, it’s probably a good idea to make sure they’re bright and shiny on the inside. Speciality machines especially, like a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, should be cleaned regularly with a CPAP cleaner.

No one has time to clean everything. But there are a couple of things that should find themselves on your list. These items are pretty simple to clean, or to have someone clean for you, and you’ll feel a lot better after you do.
