This is quite possibly the first gingerbread stout that we have reviewed. The beer pours with a head that does not dissipate, whiel the overall color of the beer is an incredibly dark brown / black that permits no light through. The nose of the beer is a little bit of an enigma; while it has hints of alcohol present, what will ultimately present itself to imbibers is considerably different. Despite being set at 9.0% ABV, the smoothness of the Merry Maker ensures that individuals will be able to complete this beer quickly. The Merry Maker is incredibly intricate and deep; each subsequent sip that one has will yield a considerably different array of flavors. This means that any point during the beer, hints of gingerbread, sugar, smoky malt, and cloves can be discerned. While not quite as present, flavors including brown sugar, cherries, cinnamon, and nutmeg can be discerned. A slight hop aspect (25 IBU) provides a slight bite that cuts through the sweetness of the Merry Maker and creates additional levels at which the beer can be enjoyed.
Merry Maker can be purchased in a 22 ounce bottle; while rare, there is a good chance that your local beer store will have a bottle or two to spare; this is simply delightful and should be actively sought out by anyone that is a fan of Samuel Adams’ offerings or of stouts generally.
