Robert Rodriguez has made a career out of gory, DIY movie fun, taking B-Grade camera tricks and actors and creating hard-to-look-away stories. He’s managed to do the same thing on TV with the adaption of his From Dusk Till Dawn movie. In the second season, the morally-questionable bank robbing brothers Seth and Richie have split up, but are each still dealing with vampires south of the border.
Much like the movie, the series mixes light horror with humor and plenty of action. While a lot of the laughs are subtle, the writing is much better than you’d expect for a straight-to-video TV series (to be fair, the series was originally shown on the El Rey Network, a channel Rodriguez founded with the help of Univision, but it’s still hard to find in many areas and the DVDs are reaching a much broader audience).
Rodriguez regular, Danny Trejo shows up in the second season as The Regulator, as does Esai Morales. There are also a handful of creative cameos this time around including Demi Lovato, and Gary Busey.
From Dusk Till Dawn isn’t exactly high-brow drama, but it’s a hell of a lot more fun.
