Pretty Girl, the latest effort from Bruce Makin, is an engrossing track that builds upon earlier works like 2016’s I Got It All and 2017’s I Just Can’t Go On. The song links together a number of genres, ranging from 1980s pop rock to hard-edged rock and dance, while Makin is able to indelibly imprint his own style on the resulting composition. The disparate approaches are made into a cohesive effort by Makin. The level of confidence that exudes from this cut is substantial, ensuring that every note comes through with an insistence. There’s no meandering here, as Makin has coordinated the guitars, drums, and bass into a cogent statement. What’s perhaps most interesting during Pretty Girl’s run time is that these distinct elements are able to make their own statements while contributing to the greater whole.
I feel that the bit of fuzz that surrounds the guitar lines here do much of the single’s heavy lifting. It provides the overall spirit of the track while remaining flexible enough to allow for other instrumental elements to shine. There’s a bit of Midnight Oil, INXS, and Dire Straits that one can pick out through the course of the single, all while there’s something new and vibrant that remains front and center until the song’s final few seconds. The final thirty seconds, typically allowing performers a few seconds to wind things down, showcase a continued press by Makin to ensure the cut is firmly imprinted in the hearts and minds of anyone fortunate enough to happen upon it.
