Bombastic NYC-based electro-rock duo Streetlab scored a bona fide slamdunk with the April 20th release of AUTO SPKR, their debut full-length album of glitchy floor-thumpers and seam-busting bangers. After making a name for themselves reworking classic rock standards into infectious club-bangers, the pair have been rolling out their own original material to unanimous praise from music journalists and fans alike. Deli Magazine featured the band in their Best of NYC issue, proclaiming “with [their] genre-demolishing songs, Streetlab encourages even wallflowers to sashay on the dancefloor”. RCRD LBL featured “Rat Racer” as part of last week’s MP3s of the Day and Sheena Beaston raves, “StreetLab quickly burrowed a place in my heart with dance-floor filler fixes of Hall and Oates and The Doors, but it’s their original tunes that we’re super geeked about today,” referring to the contagious pulsations found on stand-out tracks, “Rat Racer” and the swagger-happy “NY Sound”.

Back in 2001, aspiring musicians Mark “Cosmo” Lamorg and Ryan Leary began collaborating on their own brand of genre-defying remixes, turning the heads of industry mavens such as of BBC Radio1’s Annie Nightingale and in 2002, inspired indie-rock label Kanine Records to solicit the duo to contribute remixes of tracks by Mixel Pixel and Professor Murder. Astralwerks, IHeartComix, and Invisible Records followed suit, adding Streetlab mixes to their repertoires.

Since dropping the album, StreetLab have released their latest single “Take Care”, a spate of fan-generated, band-approved remixes of their first single “Rat Racer”, and an off-the-wall remix of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”. You can listen to all of them here. Streetlab is also looking for remixes for their upcoming Summer remix album.

Coming up, Streetlab will receive further exposure on MTV’s internationally televised program, ‘Needle in a Haystack’. Also in the works, Streetlab is gearing up to release Volume 2 of their famous bootleg series, featuring a lavish new remix Peter Gabriel’s poptastic 80’s hit, “Sledgehammer”.
