Among different popular diets used to lose weight or for other purposes, we find the paleo diet and the ketogenic diet or keto, which although they have some similarities below show their differences so that we do not confuse them with each other.

Paleo vs. Diet Keto Diet

Although both do not allow the inclusion of cereals and derivatives or legumes, their basis is very different and the way they act in our body also:

Paleo Diet

Thus, in the Paleo diet cereals (refined and whole grains) and derivatives are eliminated, legumes are not included and of course, there is no place for added sugars or refined flours, as well as any processed or ultra-processed food.

For this reason, the keto diet is not a reduced carbohydrate diet but very low in this nutrient, since it should not exceed 10% of daily calories and there are extreme proposals that the proportion of hydrates does not reach 1% of the energy of the day.

Unlike the Paleo diet, the keto diet prohibits not only cereals and legumes but also the vast and vast majority of fruits and vegetables, since a single fruit could lead us out of the state of ketosis.

Also, in the keto diets there are certain processed as the meat that are admitted, since they do not contain carbohydrates (or at least not in significant amounts) and therefore allow to diversify the diet in the middle of a state of ketosis.

When you Lose Weight, which one is more Recommended?

If what we are looking for is to lose weight, both alternatives can help us achieve this, with the keto diet being the most aggressive and that most easily induces fat burning.

However, the ketogenic diet is not free of side effects, it is much stricter than the paleo diet that includes various fruits and vegetables and therefore, achieves less adherence and its practice is recommended for a limited time.

For its part, the Paleo diet is more flexible and sustainable over time, it does not require such strict control that it is needed in ketosis and the best, it is suitable for eating in society.

If we have to lose many kilos and require a long process, the most advisable will be a reduced carbohydrate diet but more sustainable as is the paleo diet, while if we seek to burn some fat to get rid of a few kilos or define muscle, the Keto diet may be the most appropriate.

We already see that paleo diet and keto diet are not the same, but both can be useful except cases without control or remarkably extreme that can harm health.
