We all know that if there is one special number related to the cannabis culture is 420, and if you didn’t know then perhaps this is that ‘ohhhh’ moment where everything finally makes sense.
In case you aren’t really in tune with the number 420, it is the number that represents the culture of marijuana itself, you’ll hear stoners celebrate when they find a 420 around there. You’ll be able to find it everywhere, in art, random graffitis, or even in the logo of seeds companies such as Fast Buds, and a whole other bunch of etceteras. For example, this year 2020, the whole month of april was 4/20, which made it one huge special occasion. Then normally, the 20th of april could be attributed as “the weed day” given its 4/20 as well.
But where exactly does the number 420 come from, why is it that the culture of marijuana is strongly tied to this number?
Well, while there isn’t really enough proof to state that it comes from this or that place, there are indeed several stories which have become some sort of legends that come to explain the origins of the number 420.
It all takes us back to the 1970’s, to a group of five Californian teenagers who were referred to as “The Waldos” due to the fact that they were always hanging out by the wall outside their school San Rafael.
When in the fall of 1971 the young group of athletes found out about a Coast Guard who had a marijuana plant which he could no longer take care of, with the aid of a treasure map most likely provided by the plant’s owner, the gang agreed to meet once a week at the Louis Pasteur statue outside their high school to head then over the area and search.
What was the meeting time? 4:20 p.m., after the gang’s sports training.
Once they’d gathered together, The Waldos would hotbox their car and scout around Point Reyes Forest in the search for the free herb with the aid of their treasure map and their bloodshot eyes and dog’s nose.
Word has it that they were able to spread 420 all over the world because The Waldos were good friends with the band Grateful Dead who they began using the term with when they gathered for a smoke and so 420 started spreading. It finally became global after ‘High Times’ stumbled upon a 420 reunion flyer which explained the story behind the number, which was then published.
So now that we’re 4 months away from our dear stoner christmas, the 20th of april, I’d say it’s the perfect time to get some marijuana seeds, germinate and grow them. If everything goes well and my calculations are right, you should be able to enjoy some freshly harvested, dried and cured buds exactly by that time. Autoflowering cannabis seeds normally take between 2 to 3 months to grow, and drying at least another 2 weeks, talk about perfect timing, anyone?
