The power movies have on a bride-to-be should never be underestimated. A single scene on screen can evoke tears of joy or sadness, striking a chord deep within us. At their best, these films capture the very essence of true love, leaving us daydreaming about our own “I do” moment. At times, however, the groom’s affair with the bride’s best friend can unfold in such a way that it leaves us wanting to throw the remote at the TV (particularly if we’ve had the misfortune of experiencing something similar in real life).

Despite these occasional plot twists that have us laughing or crying, wedding movies remain a go-to, as they offer an escape into a world of emotion. Whether comedies, dramas, or romantic fantasies, they give us more than love stories as they explore universal themes like letting go, the chaos of wedding planning, and the complexity of family dynamics. These movies can inspire us to dream big and embrace life’s potential, whether through romanticized weddings or the stunning fashion they showcase. They remind us of the beauty of relationships: the highs, the lows, and everything in between.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

This movie encapsulates the tumultuous story of Toula, a wretched 30-year-old single woman who still lives with her parents and works at her family’s Greek restaurant. You would expect parents to be your biggest supporters and deeply care about your dreams, but unfortunately, Toula wasn’t born into a family that possesses such values, considering her father sees Greek women as baby machines that have the sole purpose of marrying (a Greek man), giving birth (to Greek children), and taking care of everyone until their final day. Toula loses all hope for life, as her father already seems to have planned everything for her, leaving her agonizing through desperate thoughts. Her ethnic heritage weighs on her mind as an onerous obligation that seems unlikely to conclude on a positive note.

Love gives life meaning, so everything changes when Toula falls in love with Ian Miller, a high school English teacher. Her feelings for him are so strong that they drive her to reinvent her entire look (she gets contact lenses and new clothes), deliberately presenting herself flawlessly, tailored to align with his male gaze. They are involved in a romantic relationship, kept secret in the first phase, as she knows her father would probably flare flames in a fiery display of frustration because his daughter is dating a man who is not Greek. Luckily for her, besides that Ian comes from a family that is closed off and restrained, he is willing to make genuine efforts to marry her and receive her family’s acceptance. My Big Fat Greek Wedding encompasses numerous facets, such as true love, cultural stereotypes, and the parental generation that constrains their children’s aspirations by forcing them to live an unmeaningful life.

27 Dresses

This rom-com illustrates the theme of love intertwined with sacrifice, the urge of women to prioritize their career over the romantic life, and an incurable obsession with fashion that sometimes makes viewers to stuff their closets with everything from pastels to ruffles, tulles, and matching handbags. Jane, the movie’s main character, is a serial bridesmaid who developed an excessive commitment to other people’s weddings (she has personally arranged the weddings of 27 friends and relatives, acquiring refined tastes in organizing and fashion). She developed an exquisite sense of fashion, being capable of choosing the groom’s suit and the mother of the bride’s dress in seconds upon request. Jane could even dress dogs to perfection if asked. It wasn’t the case, but everyone knew she could effortlessly do these things, which recommended her as one of the best wedding-planners.

This movie captures several plot twists, such as the man Jane was in love with falling for her sister, Jane stopping their wedding, and ultimately marrying another guy named Kevin.

Runaway Bride

Ike Graham, a columnist for USA Today, is faced with the pressures of a looming deadline and a dearth of inspiration. He finds it prudent to craft his piece based on the story of a girl called Maggie, known for her long-established pattern of abandoning fiancés at the altar. As he relied on the resentful statement of a man from a bar under the influence, you can imagine how thrilled Maggie was when she read the article: she wasn’t. She decided to write a harshly-worded letter to his editor (his ex-wife) in which she criticized the glaring inaccuracies contained within it. This mistake almost got him fired, but he was given another chance of managing to write a more factual article about Maggie’s life. He travelled to her town, and the rest is history. You have to watch the ‘Runaway Birde’, as it ends with their wedding where hundreds of participants are placing bets on whether the bride will go through with it or run away.

Bride Wars

Emma and Liv started scrapbooking, brainstorming, and planning every detail of their weddings when they were about 6 years old. They agreed they would get married at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on the same day. These innocent dreams later became a source of tension when someone informed them that it was not feasible to celebrate their big days simultaneously. Someone had to change the date, and neither seemed willing to relinquish this dream, resulting in a humorous rivalry.

In the beginning, Emma and Liv are presented as two air-headed women, both victims of shopping and the consumerism industry. Later, they serve as proof that there are some bonds in this life that can never be broken.

Final Thoughts

When watching wedding movies, be sure to keep some tissues at hand, as you’ll undoubtedly need them—whether for tears of laughter or emotion. If your name is Jackson and you’re 40 years old, you probably won’t be shedding tears of emotion, but we assure you’ll have a great time while watching it with your wife(If she’s happy, you should be happy as well) !
