Pick Your Poison #4

Pick Your Poison #4 / :45 / $2.00 / 60M / Nate Gangelhoff, PO Box 8995, Minneapolis, MN 55408 / http:/www.pickyourpoison.net / Nate is the edtior of You Idiot!, which is easily one of the best zines to be in its current run. I came into Pick Your Poison with a very positive outlook, and I was not disappointed in any way. This issue, Nate talks about 28 specific things,…

The Perfect Mix Tape Segue #2

What I wasn’t familiar with the first issue of the zine, this issue came to me as a packet of Microcosm stuff, and by far, this is equitable in quality to any of the other zines in that parcel. This time, we are treated to a personal zine done by Joe, detailing the ennui of having everything one could want and the encroaching stagnation of being in such a position.…

Pets and Publishers

Pets and Publishers / $2 / :25 / 40M / Knucklehead Press, PO Box 307663, Columbus OH 43230 / http://www.knuckleheadpress.com / A zine that was a long time in formulation, Knucklehead Press’ Pets and Publishers is a recounting by a number of other zinesters about their animals, past and present. Each zinester has a decidedly different style from the rest of the batch, and as such, makes for an excellent…

Pee Zine #19

Pee Zine #19– One of the large zines from Australia. This magazine is at the state of success due to the amazing writing and content contained within. This issue, from about six months, was able to catch Jimmy Eat World in an interview just before they totally came onto the mTV scene. Other pieces, with such established acts as dynamite boy, millencolin, and whippersnapper, all let the magazine progress with…

Parts and Pieces #5

¼ Sized – 44 Total Pages. This is an excellent perzine that focuses in on a number of journal entries about this college-aged chica, Marcy Pieces. As well as being an excellent person to talk to, she writes an excellent narrative zine through her journal entries, detailing her love life in an excellent typewriter and c&p zine. The sheer amount of emotion showcased in this zine is enough to fill…

Paranoia #3

Paranoia #3 – All that I really need to say about this zine is that there is literally enough information crammed in this zine to provide a week’s worth of reading. With that, there are some problems with this zine, including the incredibly long interviews that Rachel sticks in, as well as the seemingly random pieces that are abound in this zine. Perhaps if some of those weak pieces were…

OMGWTF #1

OMGWTF #1 / Free / Half-Sized / 28 Pages / http://ska.ca/omgwtf / [email protected] / [email protected] / This was one of the most novel approaches to doing a zine that I’ve ever heard: Killer and Justin both have a pile of material, and do their own version of the zine. So, Canadians get Justin’s copy and Americans get Killer’s copy. Pretty much all of the material in the first issue is…

O.J. Killed Elvis #2

This is a reprint of the original zine, where the editor Mike made notes about the pieces he had originally wrote 4 years before. Where he says that the zine sound amazingly well, I just don’t see what that was. I mean, the zine is a fun read, but bogged down by a lot of teen angst issues that just made a lot of the pieces run together for me.…

Obscurity Unlimited #17

Obscurity Unlimited #17 I got this magazine because my #7 was reviewed in it. Still, I don’t know how the editors of this magazine got this issue. Nevertheless, this magazine does wonders for the small press person, including a great number of helpful reviews, interviews with fellow small press creators, and even goes as far to go and include listings of the various small press syndicates. The magazine has been…

Obscene Emission #2

Obscene Emission #2 / $? / :45 / 64M / 109 Arnold Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island 02905 /  This is the first crust-punk zine that I can honestly say I’ve had the pleasure to read. As I should have guessed, there is not much in the way of white space in this issue, with inverted-color paragraphs (black backdrop with white text), and surprisingly, the quality of writing in this issue…

Nuthin #19

Nuthin #19 / $2 / 60M / http://www.myspace.com/nuthin_zine / Nuthin is a zine that I feel disappears from my radar for a few months before coming back into focus. I always have a decent time reading their magazine, even if the interviews and columns seem to be a little on the longish side. The advertisements that are present in this issue are for very small record labels, and as such,…

Nuthin’ #17

Nuthin’ #17 / $? / 1:30 / 72M / http://www.myspace.com/nuthin_zine / Nuthin’ is a zine that has moved into the realm of more classic zine like Maximumrocknroll. The size of the zine (both in terms of physical size and page count) is lower than that of MRNR, but there is a lot of material to go through this time. There are a number of advertisements in this issue of Nuthin’,…

Nuthin #2

Nuthin #2 / $1 / Half-Sized / 40 Pages / [email protected] / Danny White, 2387 State Route 753, Washington Court House, OH 43160 / Two kids make this magazine something that has been lacking in the punk zine scene for many years : just a fun little read without overly reaching into politics or personal text. Opening up the zine with Top Five Lists, we get a nice little view…

Now it’s dark

July 2001 – I know why this zine is free, and because of it, it really suffers. Sure, the circulation increases when ad revenues increase, but unless page count rises, then substance decreases. NID suffers from a serious lack of material, sandwiching small interviews in between advertisements for various Columbus-area strip clubs and glamour shots of the large bands to play Columbus. Honestly, for a zine that could do so…

No Snow Here #10

No Snow Here #10 / $? / 36S / :20 / [email protected] / It has been a while since I’ve seen a personal zine of any sort, so reading No Snow Here took a decent chunk of time. The writer of this zine is Nadia, and the topics broached in this issue include Arab-American identity and feminism. What Nadia comes back to a number of times during this issue of…

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #31

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #31 / $2? / 28M / 445 ½ Randolph St, Meadville, PA 16335 / http://www.freewebs.com/50eggs / Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs has came with an issue in a very short period of time. It was only a few days ago that I last had the chance to review the zine, and this go around seems much more strong than #30. #30 was a solid read,…

Lulu’s Puppet in Chains

Lulu’s Puppet in Chains / Half / 16 Pages / Brenden McDonald /  While this artist is not afraid to place his name, one wonders if ey might not have waited before publishing this very short zine. Very sketchily done, Lulu’s Puppet in Chains details probably about a minute of action, and ends without any serious resolution. The cover of the zine, sadly, might be the most interesting part of…

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #30

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #30 / $2? / 28M / 445 ½ Randolph St, Meadville, PA 16335 / http://www.freewebs.com/50eggs / Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs is a zine that I always look forward to. The writing and art style of Steve Steiner (the focus behind the magazine) is fun and very distinctive. As I have said in previous reviews of this zine, Steve is VERY influenced by the sixties…

Low Hug #10

Low Hug #10 / $3 / 1:15 / 48M / A.J. Michel, PO Box 877, Lansdowne, PA 19050 / http://www.lowhug.blogspot.com /  I had heard of Low Hug for a while before actually picking this issue up, but I never in my wildest dreams thought that it would be such a philosophical and well thoughtout type of zine. There are segments and selections from different works that include anarchist writers such…

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #26

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #26 / $? / 20M / http://www.myspace.com/eat50eggs / 445 ½ Randolph Street, Meadville PA 16335 / Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs is always an interesting zine. This issue begins with a color cover of seagulls, and moves from that into one of the “True Adventures of Steve Steiner”. This issue of NCE50E has a varied approach, which means that much like an issue of MAD…
